I began this hike by taking BART to Downtown Berkeley station and walking through UC Berkeley campus (Go Bears!!) to find a fire road in Hamilton Gulch, just below the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories. The climb took me past the "Big C" that overlooks Cal's campus, and across a hillside with dozens of Turkeys darting from shade to shade in little groups. The trail then heads southeast on very well-maintained trails all the way to Lake Chabot, where I hiked around before taking the San Leandro BART back home. I wish I had taken some pictures of this hike because the views from the long ridgeline trail were fantastic. This was my first hiking trip to the East Bay, and was surprised by the exposure on the trails, which seemed to follow only the tops of mountain ranges as opposed to the lush inter-forest trails of the Peninsula.
